I’m wondering if my intense need for perfection was actually editing out my authenticity. Then I’d email it to myself and edit it on my laptop. I used to make notes for future articles, and draft out whole paragraphs, eventually turning into pages, in the iPhone’s Notes app. But I’ve also found that readers tend to enjoy my more spontaneous work, and the mobile app encourages that sort of content. I think I have a fear of accidentally publishing something that’s not ready, so I steered clear of Medium until I had a perfectly formatted and referenced version ready to upload. I don’t normally like uploading something that’s not finished, but I decided to push through that barrier and just give it a go. Most of my formatting was done in Word too. I don’t usually write directly in the New Story tab, but rather I would plan my drafts in a Word document first. But the iOS editor is WYSIWIG and it actually helps me a lot more when considering paragraph length and finished on-screen appearance. I went into it thinking I might just make notes, assuming that the editor would be too small and fiddly to create an actual article with. Previously I’d written and edited all my articles on my laptop but just like using a pen and paper, writing on a phone brings something different to the writing process. I wrote my last article on my iPhone, and I’m using it to write this article right now.
